Try before you buy

While Android is available on the G1 phone from T-mobile, some may not have a G1 phone. Or maybe you want to wait for another device to come out. Either way, the Android emulator, included in the Android SDK allows you to try before you buy and do almost everything you would do on an android device, and you can download it a few places. Softonic is a great software downloading site. Or you can just go to Googles official development page. I went to Softonic to check out their software and downloaded mine there. They have a step by step guide to running and installing the Android emulator.  They also have some apps you can download and try.

Android G2 PC

With a Via C7-based Nano-ITX board, 1 Gb of RAM, an 800MHz processor and an 80 Gb HD, the Android G2 PC was Put up on Ebay As a collectors item. You can Bid on it right now at Ebay. The proceeds are to be donated to DonorsChoose.org

Update: That G2 sold for $860! Thats crazy! A desktop pc with those specs would normally sell for like 300 tops…….

Other Android devices

So far we’ve seen the T-Mobile G1 phone and there are rumors buzzing all over about other Handset carriers providing the public with more Android powered phones. But is Android limited to phones alone? Not at all. There is very good reason to believe that Android will power many more devices beyond mobile phones. Google already invited Asus, maker of the low cost PC laptop, to join the OHA, (Open Handset Alliance) bringing about talk of small, lightweight “netbooks” running Android. There is talk of Android running on mobile Internet devices, portable media players, game consoles and even car dashboards.

Are there other cell phones being built with Android in mind?

Rumors have it that Motorola is working on an “Android social networking smart phone”.

Its been suggested that maybe this indicates a focus on MySpace, Facebook, etc. who knows. But sounds interesting.

Samsung and LG were apparently working on a couple Android based phones to be released at the end of September. But now it sounds like they’ve stretched it out till at least the middle of ‘09.

We all want to see something before we buy it. Here are some of the sweet features on the new Android TMobile G1 phone.

Android vs Iphone

So one of the main questions in the mind of anyone shopping for good a web based cell phone is should I get an Iphone or wait for android to come through on the T-mobile G1. Well I’ll tell you for starters I tried the Dare I kept seeing advertised on TV with verizon and I was very disappointed with the internet browsing…it was complicated working my way around the web pages, and not only that but the sensitivity i thought was horrible. Whenever there was a link on a page, unless it was huge I had to tap a million times before it would select it.

Moving on to the Iphone and the G1, buying a phone and a two year agreement not only locks you down with one company for what seems like way too long but if you get a nice phone like the Iphone your going to spend a good piece of a paycheck just buying it. So research is a have to if you want to make it worth your while. And don’t go to the site advertising the phone like AT&T for the Iphone or all you will hear is the good stuff about the phone. Look instead at reviews from people and companies that have already used and tested the product that you want. Theres always two sides to the story.

For instance The Iphone has been a coveted phone for so many people including myself for some time because its got a sweet touch screen and lots of storage for music and acceptable web browsing, But what they don’t tell you in their advertisements is the lack of camera options, the poor sound quality on the speakers, etc.

I stumbled across a blog about 25 things wrong with the Iphone,…since the original 25 there are well over a hundred complaints about it added on. Now we all know that Theres no perfect phone that satisfies everyone out there. Some of these complaints are just wishes for more applications and whatnot. But this is exactly my point! With the G1 there are limitless opportunities for anyone to work with the software to adapt to anyone and everyones wants and wishes. It was pointed out previously that Google has even offered $10,000,000 in prizes for the best applications made for android. Encouraging and promoting the fact that this is not a locked down deal ..more like the sky’s the limit.

Personally I’m into photography and I don’t think there are any phones out there that can take a super nice picture but the nicer they get the happier I am, and I’ve heard nothing but bad about the Iphone camera so far….The G1 on the other hand has a 3.2 megapixel camera on it which is i believe the best out there so far. I of course haven’t used it yet but it sounds pretty good.

Google’s Android

34 mobile and technology leaders came together to form the Open Handset Alliance offering consumers an extremely cost efficient, powerful mobile experience, a mobile platform freely available to all handset makers and wireless carriers. Although most of us can’t get our hands an android enabled phone yet, we can take some sneak peeks at it and at least get the latest updates on whats happening with this mobile industry changing, ANDROID!

On November 5th, 2007 the open handset alliance announced Android. November 12th, 2007 Google released a software development kit for the platform and is already encouraging third-party development by offering $10 million in prizes to those who build the best applications. April 17th 2008 1,788 submissions were received. 20 winners were announced on Aug 28th. $5 million was awarded to developers for great Android applications. September 23rd, 2008 The world’s first Android-powered phone is announced. Phones will be available to consumers on October 22 at a much more reasonable rate than many would have expected, Tmobile, the only carrier so far, has been selling the G1 to customers at around $180 with a two year agreement of course! Although,….. customers have to pre-order and it takes some time before you actually get your phone. There are leaks out that Best Buy is selling the T-Mobile G1 in October or early November.
