If you purchase a T-mobile g1 can you use a sim card froman already existing plan or do you have to start a new contract with a g1 specific plan. Also if you do not purchase a full internet access plan can you still use the g1’s wifi capabilities with a home network or other hotspots?

If you choose to get the G1, it is $399 without contract.
Yes, you can have the G1 with an existing plan, no new contract is necessary.
There are two seperate plan for the G1 data/sms. They are as follows: T-Mobile G1 Unlimited Web + 400 Messages $24.99/month –AND– T-Mobile G1 Unlimited Web + Unlimited Messages $34.99/month.
Yes, if you do not purchase a full internet access plan, you can still use the G1 WIFI to access the Internet.
((FYI, you must have a gmail.com e-mail address if you choose to purchase the G1 to register and activate the phone))

You can buy the cell at full price and use your prior sim card in it. You do not have to renew your contract. You do need a voice plan package. Without the voice plan the g1 phone functions will not work properly but there are rumors that tmobile is working on adding a data plan without the voice plan.

There’s a few answers to your questions. For one, good luck on buying the G1 and using it with the sim card you have now and not running into problems, it’ll cost you the 399.99 retail price because you have to get it through a third party dealer. Get it through T-mobile and settle for a 2 year contract or a 1 year contract and get it for 179.99.
Lasty, the G1 WILL NOT WORK WITHOUT A DATA PLAN. T-mobile requires that you add one of the internet data plans (listed at the other answer). The best way to go: It’s a great phone, just open a new line of service or add it to someone’s else’s line and get the phone at the good price, and keep it for two years.
